Benefits of Solar

Lower Utility (Electric) Bill

We will design a system that can bring your current electric bill as close to zero as possible. Please understand that how close to zero your electric bill gets is dependent on many factors like your roof space, sun exposure, preferred panel placement and the amount of electricity you use. We will work on a plan together to achieve this goal.

Lock in Rate

The right solar program can simply replace your current utility provider’s electric bill with a lower electric expense and a fixed rate. Homeowners who choose this are typically doing this less for the immediate savings but more for the protection from utility rate increases and utility provider shenanigans. It is a fantastic shield against inflation and the inevitable price increase on the most in-demand commodity in the world.

Increase Home Desirability

If this is your goal, we have a program and solution for you. Typically homeowners that want to achieve increasing their potential home value and attractiveness will opt in to programs that might see a quicker return on their investment. The question, will solar raise my home value, is a controversial one. Will it guarantee the new buyer will pay more for your home? Of course not, but neither does a brand new $80,000 kitchen or an in-ground pool.

Reduce Carbon Footprint

No matter how you go solar, reducing your carbon footprint is a natural symptom of installing solar. If this is the primary goal, the energy consultant would discuss a few different ways to achieve this by learning about your current situation with your utility provider and your financial situation.

Electric Bill Budgeting

Some folks just want some predictability and certainty in their life. Whether it’s because they are retired or are approaching retirement and want fixed, not fluctuating electric costs, or because they prefer to budget for the future. Whatever the reason, If this is important to you, we would be happy to discuss how solar can help with budgeting for electric costs.

Power Outage Protection

“Should I get a battery or a generator?” “How much is a solar battery?” “Are there incentives for storage for solar?” These are some of the questions that we are asked by an individual who is planning for the worse. You never know how long a blackout will last. If this is a priority for you, our solar experts can help you in figuring this out and guide you along the right path.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does this cost?

Depends on the program you choose, but a most of our popular programs will replace the cost of your electricity bill. As long as the homeowner meets certain conditions, the panels and labor are provided at no cost. To learn more, take a look at our pricing guide.

What if I have an old roof?

No worries! A trustworthy solar company always conducts a thorough roof assessment before installation. So, don’t fret about placing new panels on an aging roof—it might not pass the initial survey if it’s too old. If it’s a concern, we can explore roofing solutions. However, your roof might surprise you and pass with flying colors!

What if I have a new roof?

A new roof is certainly better than an old roof. When I get asked this question it typically leads me to believe you are wondering about the warranty with the current roof provider. Most of the time, if your roof brand is a national, recognized brand like Owens Corning or GAF or any similar brand, then solar will not void the roof warranty. But please make sure your installer is certified and insured and reputable. A good solar company will also provide you with at least a 10 year roof penetration warranty.

What do I do when there is snow on the solar panels?

Nothing at all! A reputable and honest solar company will factor in snow accumulation in their production estimates. So whatever power that is promised to be produced in a year’s period regardless of rain or snow will still be produced. Typically there is a power guarantee that comes with your system. Here at Cleanstart, we tend to be a bit conservative with our production estimates so at the end of the year, our homeowners learn that their system out performed what we originally estimated.

What happens if there is a power outage? Will my lights stay on?

No. Not unless you have a generator or a battery installed with your solar system.

In the northeast we have a lot of rain and snow unlike California. How will that work?

You don’t need to live in California to be able to benefit from solar. Most companies factor in local weather patterns and historical data in their production estimates. Cleanstart uses one of the most accurate and advanced production simulators in the world so we give our customers very accurate and a true analysis of what their system will produce even in the most inclement weather. We also guarantee the production. As long as there’s sunlight that hits your roof, solar is a viable option no matter your location.

What if I sign up for solar and move a few years later?

People often assume that you’re stuck in your solar agreement. If you decide to list your home for sale, everything transfers where you left off. The transfer process is often easier than transferring the name in the utility bill believe it or not. We have systems in place that make the transfer process seamless and there are many options available to you and the prospective buyer of your home. You might even be able to sell the home faster than if the home did not have solar. If you have solar with us and would like help in this process, please let us know and we will walk you through it.

How much money can I save?
This really depends on how you go about acquiring solar. Whether it is a PPA, or a finance to own or full cash purchase, the overall savings will vary and also be purely dependent on when you get solar due to the decreasing state incentives and how much sunlight your home gets.
With that said, the most popular program which is the PPA (power purchase agreement), you can expect your year one savings to be about 15-20% of what you are currently paying. Year 5 would be approximately 50% savings and year 7-9 is approximately 100% savings. These estimates are assuming you are with PSE&G utility provider. The total accumulated savings is usually in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Please remember that results vary. There is so much that factors in on how much savings you would get. Sunlight, the program you choose, your utility company, when you do it, what you’re approved for, etc. Once your analysis with your solar professional is complete, you would have a detailed breakdown of your savings.
What are the current incentives for solar in New Jersey?

These are ever evolving and consistently being re-evaluated. Unfortunately not to the benefit of homeowners. NJ does not have an unlimited amount of money to incentivize homeowners to go solar so it is on a first come first serve basis. It is purely based on the size of your solar system and right now the average amount an average home would receive from the state is around $6,000.

How do the solar programs in New Jersey work?

This is a great question and also requires an extensive and thorough explanation. To know exactly how the programs work, the best thing to do is to contact a solar provider in NJ. We at Cleanstart are experts in the NJ market and can certainly help you navigate this.

Does it make sense to get solar with a PPA, loan or cash?

This all depends on the individual and their goals, however, in most circumstances, a PPA will provide the most immediate savings and this is the route that greater than 90% of homeowners take. A thorough solar consultation will be able to determine what is best for you.

How does solar affect my home resale value?

According to an extensive 2018 Zillow study and report, solar systems installed on homes in New Jersey see an average increase of 9.9% on the value of the home. This makes sense because a home with solar is able to provide a lower cost of ownership due to a lower and protected electric bill, hence lowering homeownership expenses to the next prospective buyer.
